For some incredible reason, I have been around the topic of worship all of this week.  Wednesday at bible study at my church Agape House of Worship and again on Friday at choir rehearsal with my beautiful group – Tehilla Generation and the same topic I have on this blog was the same question that was asked.  I came away this week coming to one main conclusion and please, this is just my opinion – What we think of worship is very different for everyone based on their experience with God.

There are so many definitions of worship – Yes, worship is to declare worth, to attribute worth so in essence – when we worship, we’re giving God His worth.  Some believers think that worship is a form of prayer and they are right to think so but as you grow in the Lord, your worship of Him should grow; the depth of your worship should grow.

Jesus talking to the woman at the well said (John 4:23-24)

23 A time will come, however, indeed it is already here, when the true (genuine) worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth (reality); for the Father is seeking just such people as these as His worshipers. 24 God is a Spirit (a spiritual Being) and those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth (reality).

I especially like the message version:

23-24“It’s who you are and the way you live that count before God. Your worship must engage your spirit in the pursuit of truth. That’s the kind of people the Father is out looking for: those who are simply and honestly themselves before him in their worship. God is sheer being itself—Spirit. Those who worship him must do it out of their very being, their spirits, their true selves, in adoration.”

Worship is first of all a relationship and it is that relationship that gives us the liberty to enter His presence with thanksgiving and His court with praise.  Based on my understanding of John 4:24 – in order to truly worship God, we need to do it in spirit and in truth.  We must come to know Him for who -He is and the only way to do that is to stay in the word because that is where He has revealed Himself.  That is where you get the truth of who He is.  If we do not have that truth, we don’t know Him and if we don’t know Him – how is our worship real?  I’ll stop here by saying that worship as I have come to understand it is not just the raising up of hands, the singing, the dancing and the clapping.  It is a way of life, it is a lifestyle and most importantly it is the condition of your heart.  I’ll leave you with that until next time…
